For the BPF (Band pass filter) unit, the IC-R9500 uses stable mechanical relays and large inductors instead of switching diodes and small coils which can cause distortion. This high specification means the IC-R9500 allows you to listen to weak signals between strong adjacent signals. Even in 144/430(440) MHz and above 2GHz band, it has +5dBm IP3 capability. In HF bands*, it has 110dB wide dynamic range and +40dBm IP3. Icom's wideband receiver technology achieves high specification with 5 kHz to 3335 MHz coverage (less cellular). The Icom IC-R9500-02 clearly raises the bar for professional receivers. The prior model, the R7100, used a less expensive and thinner stamped-metal frame (I don't recall what my R7000 was comprised of). The frame is a very healthy, thick, all-aluminum cast chassis. The Icom R8500 is an extremely well made receiver. The crystal is the reference for the PLL and DDS circuits to achieve these specifications. The IC-R8500 has superb high receive sensitivity over its entire range, and built in high quality crystal (TCXO) provides good frequency stability of less than +/- 10Hz below 30MHz less than +/- 3ppm above 30MHz.
